The Round of 16 match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup between Borussia Dortmund (Germany) and Monterrey (Mexico) will take place on July 2 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, USA. Borussia Dortmund vs. Monterrey: prediction and betting odds, statistics.
Borussia Dortmund
The Germans cruised through the group stage, exerting effort only when necessary. Nico Kovac's side started with a goalless draw against Fluminense, then defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3. In the final round, Dortmund needed a win by any score, which they achieved by beating Ulsan Hyundai 1-0. Notably, Borussia conceded three goals in the group, marking the worst defensive record among all group winners.
- Dortmund has not lost in regular time in 9 of their last 10 matches in the UEFA Champions League and Club World Cup (6 wins and 3 draws).
- Borussia has not conceded more than one goal in 90 minutes in 8 of their last 10 games in these tournaments.
- The Germans have not been behind at halftime in 19 of their last 21 matches in the European Champions League and Club World Cup (11 wins and 8 draws).
Predicted lineup for Borussia Dortmund (4-5-1)
Gregor Kobel – Daniel Svensson, Ramy Bensebaini, Julian Ryerson, Waldemar Anton – Yan Couto, Job Bellingham, Felix Nmecha, Pascal Gross, Karim Adeyemi – Serhou Guirassy.
Participation of forward Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is questionable due to illness.
Monterrey
Domenec Torrent's side secured their place in the 2025 Club World Cup Round of 16 only in the final group stage match, but did so in style, thrashing Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0. Prior to that, the team drew twice – against Inter (1-1) and River Plate (0-0). In total, the Mexicans are unbeaten in the Club World Cup over four matches (2 wins and 2 draws).
- At least two goals have been scored in regular time in 13 of Monterrey's last 15 games in the CONCACAF Champions League and Club World Cup.
- Both teams scored in 7 of the last 10 matches involving the Mexicans in the Club World Cup.
- The team is unbeaten in regular time in seven consecutive matches in the CONCACAF Champions League and Club World Cup (3 wins and 4 draws).
Predicted lineup for Monterrey (4-3-1-2)
Esteban Andrada – Stefan Medina, Ricardo Chavez, Sergio Ramos, Luis Reyes – Nelson Deossa, Fidel Ambriz, Oliver Torres – Jesus Corona – Jose Alvarado, German Berterame.

Borussia Dortmund vs. Monterrey: Match Prediction
Both teams are unbeaten at the 2025 Club World Cup. However, in my opinion, the Mexicans have looked more impressive, facing tougher opponents than Dortmund. Domenec Torrent's side drew with the UEFA Champions League finalist and also took points from the formidable River Plate, while the Germans narrowly defeated modest Korean and South African teams. Borussia also had a tough match against Fluminense, and they looked unconvincing against the Brazilians, generating only 0.24 xG.
I believe Dortmund will face challenges in the upcoming match as well. The game could very well go into extra time, and if the Germans win, it will likely be by a narrow margin. Notably, in their last eight international matches, Borussia has secured only one victory by more than one goal, and that was when their opponent, Barcelona, had almost guaranteed their progression to the next stage of the UEFA Champions League after thrashing the Germans 4-0 in the first leg. Meanwhile, the Mexicans have not lost by two or more goals in 38 of their last 39 matches in the CONCACAF Champions League and Club World Cup.
My prediction: Monterrey with a handicap (+1)
* The starting lineup for each team is based on their previous match in this tournament.
